$150 for store bought mouth guard? Crazy!

Check out the mouth guard!  The mouth guards have been in use for about half of the season now.  So far, we have heard of zero dental problems.  And as a bonus, both Borah and BK are having a great season.

According to the American Dental Association, there are three types of athletic mouth guards.

  1. Stock – Straight off the shelf into the mouth.  These guards do not fit to the teeth and supply little to no support.
  2. Boil and Bite  – A step above the stock guards, but these still do not fit well against the teeth and can be bulky.
  3. Custom – These are custom guards made in the dental office.  The process includes taking an impression of the upper teeth, making a model from the impression and then creating the mouth guard.  We have a new special machine that presses the mouth guards onto the models that creates a very accurate fit.  Since the fit is so snug, we can remove much of the unnecessary bulk.

The key to a good mouth guard is the fit.  I was just in the sporting store and noticed they were selling a mouth guard for $150.  This was for a boil and bite mouth guard!   In our office, we supply mouth guards to our patients for free. $150, or any amount, for a boil and bite mouth guard just does not make sense.

High School Football Mouthguards

The Lowrys love team sports.  We are mostly sport fans nowadays, but we use to play some team sports.  However, we still like to be involved with the local teams.  This year we decided we would supply two local high school varsity football teams with custom fitted mouth guards.   Normally the players we be supplied with the boil and bite type mouth guard.   This type does not adapt well against the teeth and gums.  Research has shown there is little difference from wearing a boil and bite mouth guard and nothing at all.  The custom fit mouth guards fit snug in the mouth and actually prevent most dental trauma.
We had a late start, but we were excited to hear back from Borah and Bishop Kelly High Schools.  They both agreed to allow us to make custom fitted mouth guards for their players.  We visited each school two times.  We took impressions on the first visit and delivered the mouth guards on the second.  Our staff were great as they volunteered after hours on both trips to each team.  We ended up making around 100 mouth guards.   We hope the players appreciate and take good care of the mouth guards.  Normally, dental offices sell these for over $200.  Now that we have all the special equipment to make them ourselves, we are actually giving them away to our regular patients.
