Dentures and Dementia: Memory Loss & Dental Health

Unfortunately, people who suffer from any of dementia's cruel disorders struggle with relationships, memory loss, and the execution of many daily tasks. In many cases, the first daily tasks affected relate to oral health. Tasks like brushing, flossing, or rinsing are often forgotten entirely. And for patients with poor dental health already, this neglect can become catastrophic. If you have a family member struggling with dementia, there are things you can do to help monitor and assist in their dental hygiene.
As it applies to people suffering with memory loss, here are 4 steps to keep their dental health in check--

1. Make instructions simple

"Wash your dentures" may actually be too complicated for someone with memory loss. Consider breaking the task into smaller steps and give only one directive at a time. "Remove dentures, clean mouth, carefully brush dentures," and so on.

2. Model the more difficult tasks

If someone you love is struggling to accurately brush his or her teeth, for instance, replace verbal instructions with patterned behavior. Show her how to hold the toothbrush. Or even place your hand over their hand and gently demonstrate the technique on their teeth.

3. Monitor oral care closely

Watch to see that the person you love is brushing his or her teeth (or dentures) after eating. Be sure he or she is removing and cleaning dentures each night according to the designated care plan. Watch for signs of oral discomfort as dementia patients cannot always communicate the source of their pain. Has the person stopped drinking hot or cold things? Are they rubbing their jaw frequently? These can be signs of a dental problem.

4. Maintain consistent dental visits

One you find a dentist with whom you are comfortable, make regular visits. Discuss ways you can help the person you love maintain optimal dental care.
