5 Excuses to See Your Dentist

Let's face it. Going to the dentist isn't something we typically look forward to. Despite the advances in technology, it can be scary. However, when you put it off, it can lead to serious dental problems that'll require far more extensive work later on down the line.

If you're like many people, you create psychological barriers to getting the dental care you need. Let's take a look at five common excuses to see your dentist (that you've probably made yourself).

1. I'm Fine

This is one of the most common and most dangerous excuses not to see the dentist. You may tell yourself that you're fine. After all, nothing hurts. The trouble is, there could be problems on the rise that could be nipped in the bud.

Think of your car. You don't wait until you see smoke coming from the engine to take a look at your coolant levels. The same goes for your teeth. Preventive measures can go a long way in preserving your smile.

2. Dental Cleanings Hurt

The reason for your dental pain during cleanings could very well be due to poor dental hygiene. Do you regularly brush and floss? If not, there's a good chance you suffer with gum inflammation or infection.

Speak with your dentist prior to any work being done to get their professional opinion. They can provide a preliminary look at your gums and determine whether you have any underlying issues that need addressed. It might hurt at first, but it will get you closer to fixing the problem to make future visits more pleasant.

3. It's Not in My Budget

Many people put off regular dental care because they feel it's not affordable. However, when a toothache arises, they are suddenly faced with dipping into their savings to escape the pain.

The investment in preventive care is minimal compared to the extensive work involved with fixing serious issues. Put aside a little bit of money from each paycheck to cover costs. It's worth it in the long run. If you have insurance, utilize it. And remember that most dentist offices will offer payment plans or options.

4. I Don't Want to Use All My Vacation Time

It's true that some procedures take multiple visits to complete. These can include:

Root canals
Dental implants
Bridges
Crowns

The good news is that, once you get your smile under control, regular checkups only take about an hour. Future visits can easily be scheduled outside your work hours, and they'll be a whole lot less invasive.

5. I Have Dentures

Once people have all their natural teeth removed and get dentures, they often think their time spent at the dentist is over. This just isn't true. It's critical that you see your dentist once or twice per year. During this time, they can check to ensure everything is fitting okay.

It's often necessary to make adjustments to keep you comfortable. Furthermore, there's always the chance for infection, and they can take this time to check it out.
